Some wines have come a long way in the last 10-15 years. At the same time, the costs have skyrocketed as quality improves and accolades pile-up. It has been a few years since I've had Cardinale...I use to buy a lot of it back in the mid 90's. Yesterday, we were sampled on this 2006 release, and my reaction was more than pleasantly surprised. Many $195 wines, especially Cabernets and blends from California have become stylistically similar...lower acid, big, over-the-top fruit, generous and expensive oak treatment. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of these types of wines, but you line twelve of them up and the distinctions begin to blur from one wine to the next...

An inner core of perfumed varietal fruit emerges from the glass, along with expressive aromas of smoke, minerals, mint, flowers and licorice, all of which are woven together with extraordinary elegance. The finish is long, sweet and sublime. Everything about this wine speaks to elegance, but in 1997 Salon is also a pleasure to drink young, unlike the 1996 which remains painfully backward. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2027.

This statement above comes right off the marketing material provided by the importer, and often these kinds of declarations are frankly full of "exaggeration." But, for those of you who have had the wines from Numanthia, there is no truer statement. When this wine forst hit the marketplace, it was selling for around $160 a bottle. The wine did have post-off pricing, but now it has been slashed even more.
